VR Hand Hygiene Training

Immersively creating awareness for hand hygiene in hospitals in VR.

The transmission of germs is an important topic in hospital hygiene. But how can it be made visible? The “VR Hand Hygiene Trainer” solves this problem by tracking and visualising every surface the users touch.

Employees and trainees enter configurable test scenarios, in which they act out typical procedures of their work at the hospital. After a session the germ-view can be activated, giving the participants an impactful ‘aha’ effect, when they see where and how they have spread germs.

Immersive 3D Simulation

The detailed replica of the hospital environment lets participants immerse themselves in a familiar environment. The interactions in the VR world are extremely intuitive which further enhances the immersion and benefits the learning effect.

Configurable Scenarios

Assemble training scenarios according to your needs from within the application.

Germ Visualisation

When carrying out given tasks, the application simulates the picking up and the spreading of germs through your own hands or your utensils based on how regularly you disinfected your hands. This is hidden to the participants and only becomes visible once the germ-view is activated. To accurately simulate transmissions, each finger and the used utensils of the participants are precisely tracked.

Monitoring and Evaluation

Over a monitor the VR-View of the participants and the contaminations can be tracked in real time. All actions of the participants are recorded and can easily be evaluated.

Developed by digital agency Ateo on behalf of the University Hospital Zurich, the application was initially used for research. Now it is employed in the education of students at the University of Zurich.
